
The keyboard looks more confusing before you touch it. All those white keys, all those black keys, and somehow you are meant to know where C is. If you are learning piano notes without reading staff notation yet, start with the shape of the keys. The black-key groups are the landmarks. The note names come after.
This page only covers how to name the keys. No full sheet-music lesson, no chord theory, no promise that stickers will make everything faster. Just a clear way to find the notes on a piano, check yourself, and carry the pattern into the next octave.
The black keys repeat in groups of two and three. That repeating pattern is the easiest way to stop feeling lost.

Open Music Theory explains the same landmark rule in its black-key groups section: C sits immediately to the left of a two-black-key group, and F sits immediately to the left of a three-black-key group.

That is the whole neighborhood. Small, but enough.
White keys use seven letter names:

On the keyboard, they keep repeating. If you find C, the next white keys to the right are D, E, F, G, A, B, then C again.
For beginners, I prefer starting at C because the black-key group makes it easy to locate. Find any group of two black keys. The white key immediately to the left is C.
From there:
C -> D -> E -> F -> G -> A -> B -> C
A small reality check: "middle C" is useful, but not required for naming every key. You can name a C at the low end, the middle, or the high end. They are all C. They are just in different octaves.
The Open Music Academy's keyboard and accidentals guide describes the white-key sequence as C-D-E-F-G-A-B repeating, with C4 at the middle of the piano staff system. In this article, when octave numbers appear, I use the common music-theory convention where middle C is C4.

Black keys are not wrong notes. They are normal notes with sharp or flat names.
A sharp raises a note by one half step. A flat lowers a note by one half step. On a piano, one half step means the very next key, whether that key is white or black.
Most black keys have two common names. Same key, two spellings.
So the black key just to the right of C is C#. The same key is also just to the left of D, so it can be called Db.
Which name should you use? For now, use the spelling printed in your song, app, or teacher's chart. If the chart says F#, say F#. If it says Gb, say Gb. The key is shared, but the musical spelling can matter later.
Also notice the two gaps:
E to F = no black key between them
B to C = no black key between them
This is where many beginners pause. Same. The keyboard looks like it wants every white-key pair to have a black key between them, but it does not.

An octave is the distance from one letter name to the next same letter name. C to the next C is an octave. A to the next A is also an octave.
Here is the same pattern with octave numbers, using middle C as C4:

Text version: after B4, the next C is C5. The letter pattern starts again, but the octave number changes.
You do not need to memorize all octave numbers right away. The main thing is simpler: every C is found to the left of a two-black-key group. Every F is found to the left of a three-black-key group. The rest of the piano keyboard notes fill in from there.

Key stickers can be useful for a little while. They can also become a crutch. The danger is that your eyes learn the sticker before your hand learns the keyboard.

When you check yourself, do not rush. Say the landmark first: "two black keys, left side, C." Then play the note. It feels slower for a while. That is fine. The point is to build a route, not just guess correctly.
For "how to read piano notes" in the sheet-music sense, that is a separate reading task. Here, the win is being able to look at the keyboard and name the key under your finger.
Different apps and devices use different octave-numbering systems. The sound can be the same even when the label changes. Novation's MIDI octave note gives an example where the same middle C may be displayed differently between hardware and software. Check your app's convention before assuming the key is wrong.

No. Movable-do changes with the key. In C major, "do" is C. In G major, "do" is G. This article uses fixed letter names, so C always means the C key.
In some German-language systems, H means the note English speakers call B, while B often means Bb. If you see H on a chart, check the notation system before treating it as a typo.

Only if they fit cleanly and do not interfere with touch. Smaller keys leave less room, so oversized stickers can look messy or peel at the edges. Use them as temporary labels, not as proof that you have learned the keys.
The cleanest way to learn piano notes is still the simplest one: find the two-black-key group, name C, find the three-black-key group, name F, then walk through the alphabet. After a few slow passes, the keyboard stops looking like a row of identical white rectangles. It starts to have places.
