GPT-5.4 already made a big jump in token efficiency over 5.2. GPT-5.5 continues that direction.

Rule 1: If you're on ChatGPT Plus and you only use the chat interface, do nothing. The default "Thinking" mode is already 5.5. You're getting it automatically. The only reason to go find 5.4 in Legacy Models is if something breaks — and for most users, nothing will.

Limits & Trade-Offs of Moving to 5.5

A few things worth knowing before you go all-in:

GPT-5.5 introduced tighter cybersecurity classifiers as part of its safeguard updates. For most users this is invisible. For anyone working in security research, vulnerability analysis, or adjacent technical domains, expect more friction than 5.4 on edge cases.
