
You know that moment when something breaks mid-task, the terminal shows a cryptic three-line error, and every "fix" you find online is six months out of date? Yeah. I've been there more times than I'd like to admit with OpenClaw and MaxClaw.
I'm Hanks. I test automation tools in real workflows — including the broken states. This guide covers the eight issues I hit most in the current OpenClaw/MaxClaw stack, verified against the February 2026 codebase. No stale advice, no copy-pasted generic debugging steps.
Start every session with one command before you do anything else:
openclaw doctor --fix
This auto-repairs the majority of configuration issues — permissions, missing directories, corrupted config, outdated tokens. Per the official OpenClaw troubleshooting docs, it's the single fastest path to diagnosis. If --fix doesn't resolve it, run:
openclaw status --all
That gives you a full diagnostic report. Match the output against the specific sections below.

The number one cause of failed installs in 2026 is still Node.js version mismatch. OpenClaw requires Node.js 22+. If you're on an older version, the install either fails silently or the gateway dies under any real load.

If it doesn't, switch via nvm:

Then re-run the install. Per ClawTank's common errors guide, Node version issues cause a disproportionate percentage of install failures — the error messages don't always surface the root cause clearly.
Two other dependency errors that come up repeatedly:
sharp: Please add node-gyp — macOS-specific. Set the env var before installing:
SHARP_IGNORE_GLOBAL_LIBVIPS=1 npm install -g openclaw
Cannot find module './611.js' — Usually a corrupted build cache. Clean and rebuild:

If OpenClaw installed but won't start, check file ownership. This is especially common on Linux VPS setups using Podman with a dedicated openclaw user — the config lives at ~openclaw/.openclaw/openclaw.json, not ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json, and a lot of tutorials miss this.
For general permission fixes:
openclaw doctor --fix
This specifically checks and repairs permission problems and missing directories. If the gateway is refusing to bind, look for this in your logs:
refusing to bind gateway ... without auth
That means you're trying to expose the gateway on a non-loopback interface without authentication set. Either add auth to your config or keep the gateway bound to 127.0.0.1. Never expose port 18789 to the public internet without auth.
The three most common execution errors, with current fixes:
401 Unauthorized
Authentication failing at either the gateway layer or the upstream provider. Run:
openclaw models auth setup-token --provider anthropic
This switches from OAuth (which Anthropic deprecated for Claude Max in early February 2026) to a long-lived API key that doesn't need periodic refresh. For provider-level 401s: verify your Anthropic account has a credit card added and at least $5 pre-loaded — API access requires reaching Tier 1, confirmed via platform.claude.com as of February 2026.
If you're getting a gateway token error specifically (disconnected (1008): unauthorized: gateway token missing), regenerate it:
openclaw doctor --generate-gateway-token
As of version 2026.2.19+, if you don't set gateway auth explicitly, OpenClaw auto-generates and persists a token at startup. Check the OpenClaw troubleshooting reference for the token mismatch flow.
429 Rate Limit Exceeded
You've hit Anthropic's request quota. OpenClaw should handle this with exponential backoff — but GitHub issue #5159 documents a known bug where the backoff loop sometimes hammers the API instead of backing off. Current rate limits by tier (verified via platform.claude.com, February 2026):
The practical fix beyond waiting: configure a fallback model so OpenClaw routes to a secondary provider when the primary hits limits.

Appears after routine OpenClaw updates, usually when a beta feature flag in your config isn't supported by your current provider or model version. Check ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json for any beta fields like max-tokens-3-5-sonnet-2024-07-15 or prompt-caching-2024-07-31 and remove them, or switch to a provider that supports them.

This one catches more people than any other issue — and the reason is buried in a GitHub issue filed February 2026: the onboarding wizard doesn't prompt for embedding provider configuration, so memory search silently fails and the agent forgets everything between sessions. Users don't notice until much later.
Step 1: Confirm your workspace structure exists

If the memory/ directory is missing or empty after multiple sessions, your embedding provider isn't configured.
Step 2: Configure memorySearch explicitly

This config — from Molt Founders' OpenClaw runbook — wires together three pieces that need to work in concert: search indexing, context pruning, and pre-compaction memory flush. Getting just one of the three right still leaves you with the "why did it forget that" problem.
Step 3: Verify SQLite index was created

The compaction trap: Memory files loaded into the context window are subject to compaction — when the context hits its ceiling, OpenClaw summarizes older content and MEMORY.md entries can get rewritten or dropped. The memoryFlush.enabled: true setting above triggers a silent pre-compaction agent turn that writes important facts to disk before compaction runs. Without this, long sessions frequently lose context with no visible warning.
If the problem persists across restarts and you want truly session-independent memory that survives compaction entirely, the Mem0 plugin stores memories outside the context window — compaction literally can't touch them. Self-hosted mode works with Ollama + Qdrant if you want no external API dependency.
Bug: large session files cascade into compaction (Issue #6016)
If you're running session memory with sources: ["memory", "sessions"] and large session files (6+ MB), a known bug causes memory sync to fail with Input is longer than the context size, which unexpectedly triggers compaction and wipes the context — including messages received during the failure. Workaround until it's patched:

Remove "sessions" from sources if your session files grow large.
Three patterns cover most browser automation failures:
error: bundled chrome extension is missing
Per the official troubleshooting docs: fully quit the OpenClaw app (macOS menu bar) or stop the service, then reinstall:

If the error persists after reinstall, the Chrome extension installation path may have become corrupted. Check that the extension files exist under the OpenClaw app data directory and reinstall from scratch.
JavaScript-heavy pages return empty or partial data
The browser:snapshot tool captures the DOM at initial render — asynchronously-loaded dashboard content may not be present. Add an explicit wait condition before the snapshot:

If the target page has aggressive bot detection, requests will be blocked outright. There's no reliable workaround for Cloudflare-protected pages at the framework level.
Browser automation triggered from a web page — security flag
As of February 2026, prompt injection via malicious web content is a documented real-world risk. CrowdStrike's February 2026 analysis specifically calls out browser automation workflows as the highest-risk surface. If your automation is visiting external URLs as part of its execution, add a domain allowlist to your SOUL.md and explicitly block shell execution from browser sessions:

- Escalate any unexpected form submission or data exfiltration to human review
Slow response times in OpenClaw/MaxClaw trace back to three common causes:
Cause 1: Embedding reindexing on every startup
If you don't have embedding cache configured, OpenClaw re-embeds all memory files from scratch on each startup. With months of daily logs, this is expensive and slow. Fix it by enabling the SQLite embedding cache:

The cache key includes provider, model, and a hash of the text — so if you change your embedding model, reindexing happens once and then caches again. A production instance confirmed by the OpenClaw GitHub Discussion #6038 showed 1,762 cached embeddings eliminating startup reindex time entirely.
Cause 2: Memory search returning redundant results
If memory_search is surfacing near-duplicate results from repeated daily logs, it's wasting context tokens and making responses slower. Enable MMR (Maximal Marginal Relevance) deduplication:

Cause 3: Context window filling with stale content
If your context is loading large chunks of old memory files at every turn, add freshness decay and context pruning. The config block in the Memory Not Saving section above handles both — cache-ttl pruning with a 6-hour window keeps the working context lean without losing durable memories.
For VPS setups: if you're CPU-bound rather than token-bound, the issue is usually underpowered infrastructure. Per Cloudrifts' February 2026 server guide, 4 GB RAM handles low-to-moderate workloads; heavy automation schedules with concurrent task execution need 8 GB minimum.
Most issues don't require a clean reinstall. But when they do, you'll know — the gateway won't start regardless of what you fix, config files are corrupted in ways openclaw doctor --fix can't repair, or you've accumulated so many conflicting config changes you can't trace the source of a bug.
The official factory reset guide walks through the full process. Before nuking anything, back up what matters:

After reinstall, restore your MEMORY.md and memory logs from backup before reconnecting channels. Do not restore openclaw.json directly — rebuild it from scratch using the onboarding wizard, then manually add back only the config blocks you know work.
