When a concept refuses to make sense, asking AI for the finished answer is tempting. It's Anna here. I understand the relief of seeing something complete on the screen. But a completed answer can leave the original confusion sitting exactly where it was.
An AI tutor is more useful when it slows the exchange down: one hint, one attempt from you, specific feedback, then a fresh question without help. That small loop is the clearest way to judge whether you learned the concept or merely recognized an explanation.
An AI tutor is a conversational system used to support learning through questions, hints, explanations, feedback, and practice. The label describes a tutoring approach. It does not guarantee that every product follows a curriculum, remembers earlier sessions, diagnoses learning gaps, or checks every answer correctly.
You may also see terms such as AI tutor for students, AI powered study assistant, or AI learning assistant. I would judge each one by its behavior:
Khan Academy provides one concrete product example. Its official Khanmigo description says the learner experience is designed to guide students with questions instead of immediately supplying direct answers. That describes Khanmigo’s stated design, not a feature shared by every tutoring product.

A general chatbot can explain a topic or produce an answer. It can also act as an AI study assistant if you give it careful instructions. The practical difference lies in how the conversation handles your thinking.
This is a use comparison, not a claim about every product. A general chatbot can be prompted to follow the left column. A product marketed for tutoring may still give away too much. I care more about the exchange than the name on the account.
Here is an original teaching example about the difference between mass and weight. It is a scripted illustration, not a transcript from a live product test.
The learner’s goal is to understand the idea, correct an error, and solve one new question independently.
Student: I don’t understand why an astronaut’s mass stays the same on another planet while their weight changes. Please give me a hint, not the answer.
Tutor: Look at the equation $$W = m$$. Which quantity describes the amount of matter in the astronaut, and which quantity changes when gravitational acceleration $$$$ changes?

That hint narrows the problem without finishing it. I would stop there and write a response before requesting more explanation.
Student: I think mass and weight both decrease because gravity is weaker. Mass is measured in kilograms, and weight is measured in newtons. Which part of my reasoning is wrong?
Tutor: Your units are correct. Now check the equation again. Does $$$$ multiply the mass to calculate mass, or does it calculate the gravitational force called weight?
Student: Then mass stays the same because the amount of matter has not changed. Weight decreases because $$W = m$$, and $$$$ is smaller.
The feedback points to the incorrect claim without discarding the student’s useful work. Asking “Which part is wrong?” also produces better feedback than asking the system to solve the whole problem again.
Tutor: A person has a mass of 50 kg on a planet where $$g = 4\text^$$. What are the person’s mass and weight there?
Student: The mass is 50 kg. The weight is 50 * 4 = 200N.
Tutor: Correct. Explain in one sentence why the two values use different units.
Student: Mass measures the amount of matter in kilograms, while weight is a gravitational force measured in newtons.
The definitions, equation, and units in this teaching example agree with the OpenStax explanation of mass and weight. The source also includes a comparable worked example using a 60 kg person on Mars.
That last independent question matters. If I can follow an explanation but cannot solve a nearby problem, I am still in the middle of learning.
An AI response can sound calm and precise while containing a small error. Khan Academy’s current Khanmigo community guidelines tell learners to check textbooks, course materials, or other trusted sources rather than relying on the tool alone.

I use this short verification pass:
For AI for studying, “the explanation sounded right” is weak evidence. A matching source and a successful independent attempt are much better.
Move the question to a human when the tool gives conflicting answers, cannot explain why your step is wrong, or uses a method your course has not introduced.
I would also ask a teacher when:
A human teacher can notice hesitation, ask what happened before the mistake, and decide whether to reteach an earlier idea. An AI learning assistant may help prepare the question, but it should not be treated as the final authority.
No. For Khanmigo, the free teacher-tools plan and learner plan provide different tools and permissions. Khan Academy’s current plan comparison says a free teacher-tools account does not automatically provide learner tutoring access. School or district access can follow different arrangements, so check the current plan page before signing up.
For a child with Khanmigo enabled and connected to a Khan Academy parent account, yes. The official parent chat-history instructions say the parent can view transcripts containing the child’s messages and Khanmigo’s responses. School-managed accounts may also be visible to teachers or administrators. This summarizes product policy, not legal advice; families should also check the school’s privacy notice.

“Open book” does not automatically mean “AI allowed.” Use it only when the instructor, syllabus, and school policy explicitly permit AI assistance for that assessment. If the rule is unclear, ask before the test. Khan Academy’s guidelines prohibit using Khanmigo to cheat or complete work on a learner’s behalf, and some assessment experiences restrict assistance.
Policies differ. Khan Academy’s data-deletion guidance says Khanmigo conversations may remain viewable for up to 365 days and that some derived user insights may remain until account deletion. It does not promise that every history feature remains accessible after a paid plan ends. Check account settings or ask Khan Academy Support before canceling if you need a copy.
Do not assume so. Khan Academy documents Khanmigo access through its website, mobile browser, and a limited app experience, but its current access guide does not describe offline tutoring. Treat an internet connection as required unless the product’s current support page explicitly says otherwise.
The useful test for an AI tutor is simple: after the hints and feedback disappear, can you explain the concept and answer a new question on your own? If yes, the conversation supported learning. If not, take the unresolved step to a trusted source or a human teacher.
