Perplexity Computer Review

Perplexity Computer is for a multi-step task that may move among research, files and connected services, rather than a single search answer. Define the files and accounts it may access, the output you expect and which actions require your review before connecting an app. Check the selected plan and usage screen; a successful draft does not establish that a live system was changed.

What Does Perplexity Computer Do That Chat-Based Search Doesn't?

Perplexity's Ask experience focuses on finding and explaining information. Computer adds tool execution and multi-step work, including research, documents, apps and code. Its help guide lists background execution, specialist sub-agents and persistent context. Those are provider-described capabilities, not evidence that every requested workflow succeeds.
Use Computer when the desired result includes work across sources or services. For a question that only needs an answer, Ask can be the smaller task. Computer is not limited to Max: current documentation describes paid-plan access, a gradual rollout of weekly included usage for paid consumer Pro, and one-time trial turns on some free accounts. Free turns do not allow parallel agents and can end before a task finishes.

Sub-Agents, a Cloud Sandbox and Connected Apps in Action

Sub-Agents, a Cloud Sandbox and Connected Apps in Action
A bounded example is preparing a community-event brief from permitted documents and messages, then drafting an agenda. Computer can split research from document work and use its cloud environment for files or code. Ask it to show the sources and proposed changes before it sends anything or edits a live system. This is an illustrative brief, not a task run for this review.
The official guide names Gmail, Slack and GitHub integrations; Perplexity's Projects page also lists Google Drive as a connected source for Computer. Connecting a service is therefore a permissions decision, not just a way to add context. Inspect the requested account, files and actions, and grant only what the task needs. Do not connect all four services for a simple checklist.
An isolated cloud sandbox is not local-only processing or a guarantee against mistakes. Review generated code, credentials, destinations and outbound content. The standard cloud product is distinct from Portable Computer on supported local hardware. Neither product's settings should be assumed to apply to the other.

Match the task to the smallest permission set

Computer's published integration list makes the access question concrete. A community-event brief from a public venue page does not need a mailbox; drafting from a permitted private document needs that particular document but not a blanket ability to send messages. Separate those stages before starting:
StageNecessary input to identifyEvidence to inspect before proceeding
ResearchNamed public pages or approved filesSource links and any unsupported statement in the brief.
DraftThe allowed outline and intended audienceProposed text and any file the agent created or changed.
External actionExact destination, recipient and approved contentThe final confirmation and account permission; a draft is not a sent message.
For a task that ends at the draft, stop there and compare the artifact with the source. This article did not connect Gmail, Slack, GitHub or Drive, so it cannot certify cross-app success or the permissions those services would request for a real account.

Credits, the Max Plan and When Costs Climb

The consumer Max help page lists US$200 monthly or US$2,000 annually, with annual billing available on the web. Its recurring allocation is 10,000 Computer credits per month. Enterprise allocations and temporary signup bonuses are different offers.
The current credit guide states 100 credits per US$1. Actual consumption depends on the work; a typical range is not a fixed quote. Paid consumer Pro's included weekly usage is separate from credits and is rolling out gradually. Check the Usage page for your account. Ask searches do not consume Computer credits.
Unused monthly credits do not roll over. Auto-refill is off by default; if enabled, it can buy more credits, subject to the selected refill amount and spending limits. Review both the subscription and credit-purchase controls. Do not read a 10,000-credit allowance as unlimited agent work.
For planning arithmetic only, twelve fictional runs at an assumed 250 credits per run need 3,000 credits. Against an entered usable balance of 2,000, the gap is 1,000; with 4,000 it is zero. A missing per-run assumption leaves the estimate incomplete. This is not measured usage or extra cash due: the account’s included usage, bonuses, expiry and refill controls determine the actual purchase decision.
Choose Ask for a bounded answer, Computer for permitted multi-step work across sources or tools, and a manual planner for organizing information you already have. Connecting Drive or another service is justified only by the chosen task. Max's recurring credits, Pro's rolling included usage and free trial turns are different account offers; choose from the actual task and Usage page rather than treating the highest tier as the default or equating credits with cash newly owed.

Everyday Tasks a Lighter Macaron Mini-App Can Cover

Open Macaron chat to adapt the request below. Review account access and plan conditions before creating a tool.
For a weekend outing, a manual plan with times, chosen stops and notes may be enough. Computer can research and act across sources; the Macaron example below organizes information you enter. It does not fetch email, edit Drive, post to Slack or change a GitHub repository. Computer also has memory and app-building capabilities, so these should not be presented as unique to Macaron.

Sample request: a weekend outing

"Build a manual weekend-outing planner with date, chosen stop, time, entered cost and currency, and a next action. Keep unknown costs incomplete. Let me edit or remove a stop without changing the other records; do not connect external accounts or make bookings."
Suggested fields: outing date; stop; time; entered cost and currency; next action.
Proposed checks with fictional data:
  1. Adapt the outing request in Macaron and use two fictional stops. Check the account's access and plan conditions.
  2. Enter two fictional costs in the same currency, $20 and $15. Their known subtotal is $35. An added stop with unknown cost should make the complete outing total unavailable while preserving that known subtotal.
  3. Edit or remove one stop. Check that the other stop and its time remain intact. Complete real research and bookings through the appropriate provider.

Use fictional data while checking the tool. Neither a share link nor persistent memory makes confidential work appropriate to upload. Review the service's processing terms before adding real information.
Keep the outing records tied to their own date and stop IDs. A manually entered plan does not research the destination, confirm a quote or book a visit.

FAQ

Does Perplexity Computer require Max in every case?
No. Current documentation also describes paid Pro access and limited trial turns on some free accounts. Included usage and features depend on the account.
Are Computer credits used for an ordinary Ask search?
The credit guide says Ask searches do not consume Computer credits. Check the mode before starting agent work.
Can a cloud sandbox make connected-app changes harmless?
No. Review permissions and proposed actions. A task can affect an external service, and stopping it need not undo earlier changes.
What should I check before enabling Perplexity Computer auto-refill?
Auto-refill is off by default in the cited guide. Review the selected refill amount and spending limits before enabling credit purchases, and keep expiring monthly credits separate from unlimited usage or a fixed task quote.
What is the Macaron outing planner meant to do beside Computer?
The proposed planner holds stops, times, manually entered costs and a next action for a small outing. It supports a visible subtotal for known costs, while Perplexity Computer's multi-step research and connected-service actions are a different workflow.
Can the Macaron example use Computer connectors or make bookings?
No connector access, booking action or live search was tested. Check fictional stops and costs first; an unknown ticket or travel charge must remain unknown instead of making the subtotal look like a final trip price.
