Speechify Review: Voices, Documents and Pricing

Speechify is worth considering when listening makes a specific document easier to work through. Test the actual input first: selectable-text PDF, scan or a two-column page can produce different reading order and OCR problems that a premium voice will not repair. Compare the Free and Premium limits only after the material plays intelligibly at a useful speed.

What Does Speechify Do and Who Is It For?

Speechify offers text-to-speech across documents and browser content, with a broader voice-assistant offering on supported platforms. It suits listening alongside reading or when looking at a screen is inconvenient. Choose the workflow by the material, accessibility needs and devices involved.

What a classroom reading study says—and does not say

A published quasi-experiment in Port Harcourt included 205 secondary-school students with dyslexia: 60 in a Speechify group, 57 in a collaborative-learning group and 88 in a discussion-method group. Its accessible abstract reports higher reading-comprehension performance and retention in the Speechify group. That is a classroom comparison, not evidence that every user, document type or premium voice will improve comprehension.
The available publisher page is an abstract preview, so we cannot inspect the complete intervention duration, baseline balance or full outcome tables from it. The study does not verify this review's voice quality, OCR accuracy, subscription value or the current release. For an individual decision, try your own difficult passage and check whether listening improves what you can explain afterward.

We tested the public text-to-speech demo with our own sentence

In an anonymous browser session, the AI agent replaced the demo's testimonial text with a short nonpersonal 25-word English passage, left the visible controls at English and 1×, and pressed Play with the default selected voice. The interface changed to Pause, highlighted words as playback advanced, then showed Replay when it finished. Speechify public demo after the custom text reached Replay
See the playing state. This confirms that the public web demo accepted our short custom text and completed one playback without sign-in. It does not verify how natural the voice sounds to a person, whether the spoken words matched every character, how a PDF or scan is parsed, any paid feature, or a comprehension benefit. For long documents, test the exact input type and reading order before buying; this single short-text run cannot substitute for that check.

Voices, Speed Control and Document Support

Voices, Speed Control and Document Support
Start with the document, not the voice list. The provider's iOS PDF guide gives Add → Import from Files, iCloud or the camera roll → open the item → select a voice and speed → play. Android uses the plus icon with Files or Camera. These are documented import routes; no file was imported for this review.
Material you actually haveProduct route to inspectCheck before choosing a subscription
A PDF with selectable textImport the file and use the reader's text highlighting and playback controlsWhether headings, names and paragraph order remain understandable
A photographed or scanned pageThe supported scan/OCR route; Scan & Listen appears in Premium's scopeWhether the recognized words match the page, not merely whether speech starts
A two-column report or tableA representative permitted sample in the readerWhether cells or columns are spoken in the intended order
The last row is a proposed suitability check, not a fault found in Speechify. The reviewed sources do not establish an automatic repair for every complex layout. If the extracted text is wrong, changing the voice or buying a faster speed does not by itself repair it. Prepare a readable, authorized source or use an appropriate accessible version before depending on the output.
The App Store description also documents word highlighting and library syncing. Those can matter more for a long document than a brief promotional voice sample. No narration was subjectively evaluated, OCR text captured or sync behavior measured here, so this review cannot rank name pronunciation or naturalness.
If the chosen material reads out of order, pause and compare the extracted text with the original page before changing voices or speed. Use a clean text version when you have permission and one is available; otherwise retain the original for the affected passage. This is a manual fallback, not a claim that Speechify can automatically repair a particular scan or layout. No file import or PDF narration result was collected here.

Cost, Free Limits and Voice Quirks

The listed Free plan provides text-to-speech with 10 basic voices and playback up to 1.5×. Premium is listed at $29 per month on the monthly-billing view and adds natural voices, Scan & Listen, and AI features. Studio and API are separate products. Match the subscription to your platform, and choose a speed you can understand rather than treating faster playback as a learning result.
The same pricing page lists US$139 billed yearly alongside the US$29 monthly option. Annual billing is a full-year commitment, not twelve separately cancellable monthly payments. Compare those terms with the amount and document format you will actually use. The provider's descriptions of natural-sounding voices are marketing/specification claims; this review did not measure naturalness, name pronunciation or PDF/OCR performance.
Start with Free if its basic voices and 1.5× playback handle the material you need. Premium is relevant for its supported natural voices, Scan & Listen or other paid tools. At the published US prices, four monthly payments cost $116 and five cost $145, versus $139 paid annually. That favors annual billing on price only from the fifth paid month; document compatibility, comprehension and the upfront commitment still decide whether it fits.
Compare with Plaud:Plaud Note starts with a new audio recording and turns it into a transcript; Speechify starts with existing text and reads it aloud. If your problem is a scanned PDF's reading order, a recorder does not fix the source text. If the problem is capturing a meeting, a text-to-speech voice is not a recording workflow.

Plan a Listening Queue With a Macaron Mini-App

Plan a Listening Queue With a Macaron Mini-App
Use a queue to plan when to listen, after confirming the document works in the reader. It cannot generate Speechify audio or repair OCR.
"Build a manual listening queue with title, priority, chosen session length and takeaway, without importing source text. Keep estimated source minutes, hypothetical playback rate and actual listening time separate. Estimate minutes divided by rate only when the rate is positive and known."
Open Macaron chat to adapt the request; check the account's current access and the generated result.
Proposed checks with fictional data:
  • For a fictional 5,000-word item at 200 words/minute, the estimate should be 25 minutes, not an observed listening time.
  • Set words/minute to zero: leave duration unavailable. If a number appears, correct the rule before using the queue.
Duration is an estimate from entered values. Zero speed leaves it unavailable, and an unfinished item stays unfinished. Macaron may process submitted content with third-party AI providers; use permitted, minimal information. The proposed tool was not run for this article.

Scope and source notes

How this review was checked: Review for Macaron, prepared with AI. An AI agent entered a custom sentence into Speechify's anonymous public text-to-speech demo and observed its playback and Replay states. No subjective audio assessment, PDF/OCR, premium feature, account, comprehension outcome or proposed Macaron mini-app was tested.
Review scope: Speechify’s reading/TTS Free and Premium plans. Studio and API products are excluded from this plan comparison; listening-time arithmetic is illustrative.

FAQ

How do I import a PDF into Speechify on iPhone?
Use Add, then Import from Files, iCloud or the camera roll, open the item and choose voice and speed. Check that the correct document, text and reading order are available before relying on the narration.
Should I choose a Premium voice to fix an OCR problem?
Verify the extracted text and reading order separately from voice selection. If the material is wrong or out of order, compare it with the original and use a permitted clean text version when available; voice preference does not verify the underlying text.
What is the published Speechify annual-versus-monthly comparison?
At the cited US$29 monthly and US$139 annual prices, five monthly payments are US$145. Confirm the actual channel and offer; that comparison says nothing about voice quality.
What should I check before using Speechify for a two-column PDF?
Compare the reading sequence with the original page, including headings and any affected tables. Check names and technical terms in context. If the result is unsuitable, keep the original for that passage or use a permitted clean text version.
What would a Macaron listening queue add to Speechify?
The proposed queue keeps a title, priority, chosen session length and your own takeaway. It helps decide what to revisit without importing source documents or replacing Speechify's text-to-speech playback.
Can the Macaron example estimate listening time exactly?
Only with a stated word count and speaking rate as a rough calculation. A fictional 5,000-word item at 200 words per minute gives 25 minutes; a zero or unknown rate must leave the estimate unavailable, not produce a precise schedule.
