Physical activity also supports bone health, although that broader evidence does not establish what resistance training alone will do for an individual's bones.
So why is strength training important for women? These benefits have value beyond appearance. They are not exclusively female, and individual results vary. This guide explains their relevance for adult women without prescribing a workout.
Stronger muscles can handle greater demands. Strength training, also called resistance training, makes muscles work against resistance. Over time, they can adapt to produce more force. Greater strength can make the same shopping bag less demanding to carry.
The ACSM position summary explains the evidence for healthy adults. The research behind it found improvements in strength, walking speed and balance compared with no exercise. Researchers measured these outcomes in controlled trials; they did not assume that bigger muscles meant better function. The amount of improvement varied.
Muscle size and strength are different outcomes. Size describes how much muscle tissue there is; strength describes the force muscles can produce. Resistance training can improve both. Judge daily function by what you can do; appearance alone does not establish it.

A higher lifting result measures strength; it cannot establish increased bone density or an individual's fracture risk.

Study length, participation and the comparison group matter. A group average cannot predict your result; an association alone does not establish cause.

Women's life stages can change why strength matters. NIA's aging research found different average patterns of decline in muscle power and performance among women and men. These findings help explain why maintaining strength matters as women age; they do not predict when an individual will struggle.
